The measured journey is about 71 km and takes 68 to 85 minutes of driving - the longest of the resort zones grouped around Side. Before any of that, though, there is the lake. The resorts here are arranged around the water and the road serving them is a one-way circuit, so the driver approaches from whichever side the circuit permits and, on the way out, completes it rather than turning back. On the far side of the ring that adds several minutes at the very start of a departure, which is exactly the point in a morning where nobody has any spare.

Off the ring road, the access road runs out to the main highway near the western edge of Manavgat, and from there the drive is a straight westbound run: past the Side junction, along the open inland stretch, then Lara and the airport. Once the vehicle is on the highway there is nothing complicated left in the journey.

Timing is stable for most of the year. The pressure point is mid-July and August, in the late afternoon between roughly three and seven, when changeover traffic builds on the Manavgat approach and a departure takes the top of the range. Early morning is the opposite: the ring road is empty, the access road is clear, and the whole thing runs close to the measured time.

When you book we record the resort by name, and that name settles two things at once: which entrance the driver stops at, and which way round the lake he comes to reach it. The large properties present a single official entrance to the road even where the frontage runs for hundreds of metres, so the meeting point is the entrance itself rather than the nearest bit of pavement to your block. If you are unsure which one that is, ask reception the day before and give us the answer - it takes a minute and it removes the only real uncertainty in the morning.

Smaller hotels and apartment buildings around the lake are collected at their own front door. For departures before the day staff come on, we let the property know the evening before, so the night desk is expecting a car and the entrance is open. If you have several heavy cases and a walk from the room to the entrance, arrange a trolley with reception the night before; the driver takes the bags from the entrance onwards.

The ring road is the first difference. A driver who knows which resort you are in enters the circuit from the correct side and stops at the right entrance. A car that does not have that information can end up going the long way round the lake to reach you - and on a meter, that lap is yours to pay for before the journey has even begun.

The second difference is what happens at the end. With a booked car the amount was settled the day you reserved it, covers the vehicle rather than the seats, and is handed to the driver in cash at the terminal. There is no negotiation at the entrance, no charge for the wait if you come out a few minutes late, and nothing to pay before the day.

The third is simply whether a car turns up. This is a resort zone rather than a town: taxis are not standing by the lake in the small hours, and a departure booked for four in the morning in October depends entirely on someone having agreed to it in advance. Booked ahead, the vehicle and the driver are assigned to your pickup and nothing about the season or the hour changes that.

The service runs both ways on identical terms, and guests who book the pair together usually find the return the easier half - the resort, the entrance and the ring-road approach are already on file, so only the flight time changes.
