The measured distance is about 126 km and the drive takes 120 to 140 minutes, but on this route the first few kilometres vary far more than the remaining hundred. Alanya spreads inland and uphill around a rock that divides two bays, and your address decides how the highway is reached: the western hotels feed onto the coast road almost at once, while anything behind the harbour or up on the castle side has to come down through the older streets first.

Once the town is behind you the run is uncomplicated and long. Konaklı and Payallar pass, then Türkler, Avsallar and İncekum, then Okurcalar; after that the resort turnings stop and the road crosses the Manavgat plain. Beyond the Side junction the D400 holds west behind the hotel belt to the airport turn-off. Nothing in the middle of this journey is complicated — it is simply long, and the hour you set out matters more to it than the line on the map.

Timing is why the town section is worth planning rather than the highway. From mid-morning the seafront carries the town's own working traffic, and July and August put the changeover coaches on top of it in the afternoons. A departure that leaves early sees none of that: the streets are empty, the road is clear as far as Manavgat, and the drive comes in near the bottom of the range.

The price is settled before any of it: whatever the road does on the day, the figure does not follow.

Seafront hotels have a drive or a loading bay where the car can stand while the cases come out, and that is where the driver waits. Gated complexes work differently: the barrier needs the booking on its list or a resident to open it, so we take the compound name and the block along with the street. Guests on the castle side and in the lanes above the harbour should expect a few steps — several of those streets are steep, one-way, or too tight for a minibus to turn in, and agreeing a corner nearby is more sensible than sending a vehicle up to find out.

For departures before the desk opens, let reception know the evening before that a car is coming. The larger Alanya hotels keep a night porter; the smaller apartment blocks often do not, and a locked lobby at four in the morning costs more time than the whole town section of the drive. If you have checked out and want the beach until the afternoon, most properties will hold luggage until the pickup hour — we collect from the entrance either way, and the driver messages the number on the booking as he arrives rather than calling the room.

Taxis are one thing Alanya is not short of. Ranks work through the day, the town is busy, and a car will reach most addresses quickly. So the argument for booking a departure here is not that you might fail to find one — it is what happens after you get in.

A run of 126 km is not a town fare with a rank at each end, and it is the distance at which the meter stops being a small number and starts being a variable. What you pay depends on the hour, the season and how the corridor behaves around Manavgat, none of which is knowable in the drive at six in the morning. A booking made in advance replaces the variable with an agreed figure, quoted for the vehicle and paid in cash at the terminal.

The second thing a taxi cannot do is prepare. A booked driver already knows the compound, the gate, the number of cases and whether a child seat needs to be fitted before he leaves. He arrives at the hour you chose, not the hour a rank happens to release him, and none of it gets settled on the pavement while a flight is waiting.
