Antalya Airport to St Nicholas Church, Demre

The Church of St Nicholas in Demre marks the resting place of the 4th-century bishop whose legend became Santa Claus. The Byzantine basilica shelters frescoes, mosaics and the stone sarcophagus traditionally linked to the saint, and lies a short distance from the rock-cut tombs and grand theatre of ancient Myra — together making Demre one of the most rewarding history stops on the western coast.

Demre is a longer run — around 2 hours 30 minutes from Antalya Airport, west along the coast past Finike. It is a committed full-day trip with no straightforward public transport, so a private transfer is the comfortable way to go; many visitors pair the church with the Myra ruins and a Kekova boat trip to make the distance worthwhile.

The church is a ticketed, partly roofed site reached on the flat, so access is easier than the open archaeological sites; a museum card or single ticket covers entry. It can get busy with tour groups around midday — earlier or later is calmer. The Myra tombs and theatre are a few minutes away by car. Allow about an hour at the church, more if combined with Myra.
