The airport lies east of the city and the coast road arrives from the west, so a drive that began on a forest track ends in city lanes and traffic lights - the slowest kilometres of the whole journey. The pickup happens at your entrance, never out on the shore road. For the beach-side compounds that means the barrier at the head of the drive; for the hillside places it usually means the parking apron beside the gate, because those drives are steep and often too narrow to turn a minibus in. Put the property name down in full when you book - several complexes here begin with the same word - and the driver already knows which of the tracks off the main road leads to it.

If you are leaving in the dark, mention it at the desk the evening before. Gates at some of the walled complexes are shut overnight and it is the night porter who opens them: a thirty-second job when they are expecting you, a phone call when they are not. Have the luggage waiting inside, keep a phone audible, and your driver will send a WhatsApp message before turning off the shore road, so the wait outside is measured in seconds.

A taxi has to be brought to you before it can take you anywhere, and here that means bringing it up a forest track. The description is the hard part: an unmarked turning, a gate that looks like the other gates, trees on both sides. In season a hotel desk manages it routinely. Out of season, or at four in the morning, it turns into a phone call, an open-ended wait, and directions repeated twice.

Then there is the length of the trip.
